omega-6 fatty acid

Characteristics

  • polyunsaturated fat
  • linoleic acid (LA) --> converts to:
  • gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) &
  • arachidonic acid (AA)
  • essential fatty acid

Benefits
Omega-6 offers many of the benefits of omega-3.  It also pairs with omega-3 to produce vital hormones called Prostaglandins.  These help to maintain the immune system, circulation, cell growth, and a healthy hormonal balance.

Sources

  • vegetable cooking oils: canola, corn, sunflower, soybean
  • walnuts, pumpkin seeds

Word of Caution
Omega-6 increases inflammation, which is actually beneficial to our immune system, blood clotting, and cell growth.  However, as previously stated, our Western diet offers too much omega-6 and too little omega-3.  This imbalance can lead to chronic inflammation, disease, and primal breakdown.

Past tips have and future tips will continue to provide solutions to keep our nutrition well-balanced to prevent rather than repair breakdown.

Make it a great day!
